An ukiyo-e cat print in woodblock colour: a black cat sits on a wooden veranda and looks up at a round red paper lantern, with cherry branches, a lit window and a small Mount Fuji on the horizon, on warm beige paper.
About the artwork
The lantern hangs in the exact centre, and the cat's upward gaze leads straight to it, so the whole picture reads as one quiet evening moment. Fine light lines trace the edge of the cat's fur, the way a woodblock printer picks out a figure against a dark ground. Behind, the scene opens up in layers: a lit window with timber frames on the right, a flowering branch on the left, and a pale Fuji and hazy sun far away. A wooden sign above the doorway reads 静寂庵, roughly “hermitage of stillness.” The lantern trails a red tassel and a beaded cord. Ukiyo-e style. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- A calm evening mood. The warm light suits a bedroom or reading corner where you wind down.
- Two loves in one print. It speaks to cat owners and Japan travellers alike.
- Detail that rewards a second look. The paw pads, the tassel and the tiny mountain reveal themselves slowly.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Place it above a bedside table with a warm lamp, so the painted lantern and the real one glow together. Wood tones, paper shades and a red throw carry the palette into the room. An espresso or natural frame at 16" x 24" suits most bedroom walls.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an original woodblock print? No. It is a new illustration made in the woodblock style and printed with archival inks.
What does the sign say? 静寂庵 means roughly “hermitage of stillness.”
Is that Mount Fuji in the background? Yes, a small snow-capped cone sits on the left horizon beside a pale sun.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
