A St John's travel poster looking out through the Narrows: rust-coloured rock falling away in the foreground, the painted houses of the Battery clinging to the slope opposite, and the harbour channel opening past the headlands into the flat blue Atlantic.
About the artwork
The most rugged print in the Canada set. The cliffs are drawn in faceted planes of terracotta, salmon and grey with grass caught in the ledges, and they take up both the left edge and the whole bottom corner, so the viewer is standing on rock rather than looking from a boat. Against all that stone the Battery houses are tiny and deliberately loud — red, mustard, teal, cobalt, mint — stacked in three or four rows above a working wharf. The water is a single deep navy with fine ripple lines, and the horizon is a pale strip of sky. Title in white capitals, ST. JOHN'S above CANADA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Jellybean colour where it belongs. The painted houses read as small bright notes against grey rock, not as a whole street of candy.
- Rock with real weight. The cliff faces are faceted and shaded, so the foreground has depth rather than being a flat brown mass.
- Terracotta and navy. An unusual, warm-cool pairing that suits rooms with leather, brick or dark wood.
- Newfoundland ties. For anyone who has family on the island, or who came in through the Narrows on a boat.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The terracotta in the rock is the colour to build on: clay, oatmeal and warm white walls all suit it, and it is one of the few prints in the set that survives a dark or moody room. Espresso and black frames both work. Hang it at 20" x 30" or larger so the little painted houses stay separate — they are the whole point of the print.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Where exactly is this? The Narrows, the rock channel that connects St John's harbour to the Atlantic, with the painted houses of the Battery on the north side.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
