A Place Royale poster at the end of the afternoon: low sun raking across an empty cobbled square, grey limestone houses with steep dormered roofs on three sides, the black spire of the old stone church rising above them, and café tables folded under their umbrellas along the edge.
About the artwork
Quiet and architectural, and built on one long shadow. The paving runs from the bottom edge to the far wall in warm gold where the sun reaches it and cool slate where the buildings block it, and that division does most of the compositional work. The houses are drawn stone by stone in pale limestone with blue-grey mansard roofs, shuttered windows and rows of dormers; behind them a second set of twin spires closes the skyline. The sky is a deep flat teal that darkens toward the top of the frame, and a single tree leans in from the upper left. Title in white capitals, QUÉBEC above CANADA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The oldest square in the country, empty. No crowd, no market stalls — just the buildings and the light.
- Golden hour done with restraint. Warm paving against cool stone and a dark teal sky, rather than an orange wash over everything.
- Real architecture. Dormers, chimneys, shutters and roof pitches are drawn accurately enough to recognise the block.
- Calm for a busy room. One of the stillest prints in the set, and a good counterweight to a colourful wall.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The deep teal sky gives this print more weight than its pale stone suggests, so it can hold a large wall on its own. It looks best on warm white or bone, with a black or espresso frame to echo the spire and the shutters. In a dining room it works above a sideboard at 24" x 36"; it is also the natural companion to the Petit Champlain lane print, one square and one street from the same quarter.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What is the square? Place Royale in the Lower Town of Old Quebec, the square around the stone church of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
