This San Francisco Cable Car watercolor print shows a maroon-and-cream cable car at the crest of Hyde Street on Russian Hill, with the street dropping toward the bay and Alcatraz Island. It is a watercolor-style interpretation of the view, not an exact scene.
About the artwork
Fine ink lines draw the wooden frame, brass poles and cable rails; the steep street is a transparent gray-violet wash with the rails left light, and the blooming street trees are layered pink dots. The palette is bay blue, maroon and cream on the car and leafy green, with pink blossoms and white sails as accents. The cable car sits in the left foreground on a curving stretch of track, with riders hanging from the side step, while Hyde Street plunges toward Aquatic Park and the masts of historic ships at Hyde Street Pier. Victorian and Edwardian houses line both sides, Alcatraz Island with its prison and lighthouse sits in the bay, and the Marin hills fade into violet behind. It is a clear winter day, still green in the mild climate, and pink and blue drips run down both edges into a white paper border. "SAN FRANCISCO" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- Riding the running board. Riders with backpacks hang from the side step, the classic way to ride.
- Hill-to-bay drop. The street falls steeply from Russian Hill toward Aquatic Park and the water.
- Alcatraz in view. The island with its prison and lighthouse sits in the middle of the bay, with white sailboats around it.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The maroon, cream and blue tones suit a living room, home office or hallway with warm wood and navy accents. Give it to a transit fan, or as a souvenir for someone who rode a cable car on their first trip to the city. Pair it with our San Francisco watercolor print for a two-piece set.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of San Francisco Cable Car? No. It is an artistic interpretation of Hyde Street, and the angle of the car and some street details are simplified.
What text is printed on it? Only the city name, "SAN FRANCISCO," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
