A Valles Caldera New Mexico poster looking across the grass floor of the caldera from its wooded edge. A herd of elk is scattered over the open valley, some close enough to read individually, others reduced to dark specks near the treeline. A shallow stream loops through the foreground grass, the forested rim rises on both sides, and a pale cliff band streaked with rust-red scree cuts across the right-hand slope under a wall of cumulus.
About the artwork
The drawing is dense and linear, with the grass rendered in thousands of fine strokes and each cloud built from tightly stacked, hard-edged lobes. The palette centres on the valley: chartreuse and wheat gold through the open grassland, deep pine green in the rim forest, sage and dusty blue in the layered ridges behind. The rust-orange scree on the right cliff and the chestnut brown of the elk are the only strong warm accents, and the stream carries a thin line of sky blue through the bottom of the frame. Type across the lower left reads VALLES CALDERA in heavy condensed capitals with NEW MEXICO spaced beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A volcano seen from the inside — the flat valley floor is the collapsed crater itself, and the ringing hills are its rim.
- The elk are real subjects — a scattered herd across the grass, drawn at different distances, not one posed animal.
- Green and gold rather than desert red — a New Mexico print that does not repeat the usual mesa-and-sandstone palette.
- Depth that keeps working — stream, meadow, treeline, ridges and cloud stack read as five separate distances.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The chartreuse and wheat tones warm up cool rooms, so this print does well on grey, greige or soft blue walls where the gold has something to push against. It also sits happily beside walnut and rattan in a living room. In the photographs above, the natural oak frame picks up the meadow tones; a black frame sharpens the pale cliff band and the cloud edges.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The elk are small in the composition and reward space, so 18" x 24" or 24" x 36" is the better choice for a main wall. At 12" x 18" the valley still reads clearly but the herd becomes texture.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The printed lettering reads VALLES CALDERA with NEW MEXICO below it. The site is a national preserve in the Jemez Mountains, managed by the National Park Service, rather than a national park.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
