A Riding Mountain National Park poster from the top of the escarpment: a black bear standing in dry gold grass at the right of the frame, birch and spruce running down the slope, and a long lake with the Manitoba prairie stretching flat to the horizon beyond.
About the artwork
The bear is close enough to read properly — the dished face, the shine on the coat, the way the shoulders sit over the front legs — and it is placed at the edge of the frame rather than the centre, so the print stays a landscape with a bear in it rather than an animal portrait. Behind it the escarpment falls away in bands: gold grass, then a mixed belt of birch and spruce drawn tree by tree, then the pale blue lake, then the farmed prairie in green and straw squares running to the sky. A young spruce and a scatter of rust-red shrubs hold the bottom corner.
The layout is the Canadian park service sheet used across this series, with the type in olive: cream border, small dark capitals along the top reading MANITOBA · 50.86° N, 100.04° W · EST 1929, and RIDING MOUNTAIN at the foot over NATIONAL PARK, with the Parks Canada wordmark and beaver roundel. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- An island of forest in farm country. The print shows exactly that — wild escarpment in the foreground, cultivated prairie behind.
- A bear drawn with care. Enough detail in the coat and the face that it holds up at 24" x 36".
- Autumn colour without shouting. Gold grass and rust shrubs against green spruce.
- Coordinates on the sheet. 50.86° N, 100.04° W, established 1929.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Green and gold with a black subject: it needs a light wall to keep the bear from sinking, so warm white, cream or pale sage. Natural oak frames lift it; black frames make the bear disappear into the border. It hangs naturally beside Elk Island if you want a pair of Prairie parks, one with bison and one with a bear.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Is Riding Mountain really a mountain? It is a forested escarpment rising several hundred metres above the surrounding plain, which is why the prairie is visible below it. The banner along the top gives the park's coordinates and its founding year, 1929.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
