A Rideau Canal poster looking down the flight of locks: dark green water held between stepped stone chamber walls, a long stone arcade running along the right bank, a dappled walkway in the foreground, and the bridge and blue hills of Gatineau closing the view at the far end.
About the artwork
A print about masonry and shade. The lock walls are drawn course by course in warm limestone with their timber gates picked out between them, and they step down the page in a receding line that gives the whole composition its perspective. The canal water is a flat, almost black-green, which sets off everything around it. On the right, sunlight falls through leaves onto the paved walkway in scattered pale patches — the only broken texture in the print — and a black iron handrail runs along its edge. Behind, the wooded bank and a steel bridge in the distance. Title in white capitals, OTTAWA above CANADA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Engineering as landscape. Eight locks stepping down to the river, drawn as carefully as the trees around them.
- Dappled light. The scattered leaf shadow on the walkway is what gives the print its summer-afternoon feeling.
- Deep green calm. Almost no bright colour anywhere, so it hangs quietly in a room that already has a lot going on.
- Skaters and paddlers. The canal is a rink in February and a waterway in July; this is the version people walk past every day.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Limestone and dark green suit warm neutrals: cream, oatmeal, greige. It is a quieter companion to the Parliament Hill print of the same city, and the two hang well as a pair. Oak or walnut frames match the stone; avoid white, which makes the dark water look like a hole in the wall. Good above a sideboard or in a study.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What are the stone steps in the water? The Ottawa locks, the flight of stone lock chambers that carries the Rideau Canal down to the Ottawa River beside Parliament Hill.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
