A Portland Head Light Maine poster drawn from the ledges below the headland at Cape Elizabeth. The white tower and its black lantern room stand above a cluster of red-roofed keeper's houses, while the foreground is given over to great slabs of fractured granite with surf breaking white in the channel below.
About the artwork
Hard-edged vector shapes with dense engraved hatching on the rock, which is what gives the cliff its weight. The palette is almost entirely cold: steel blue, slate, indigo and near-black across the granite and the Atlantic, chalk white on the tower, the fence and the breaking foam, and a pale washed blue sky with a low haze bank on the horizon. The only warmth comes from the barn-red roofs on the keeper's dwellings and the tufts of dry ochre and rust grass wedged into the rock crevices. Look for the lantern gallery railing, the white picket fence along the cliff edge, the gabled dormers on the houses and the way the ledges fall in stepped diagonal planes toward the water. The type reads CAPE ELIZABETH in white capitals with MAINE letterspaced below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The rock is the star — two thirds of the composition is granite ledge, drawn with real texture rather than treated as a base for the lighthouse.
- Maine's oldest lighthouse — the tower at Fort Williams Park, seen from the angle walkers actually get on the coast path.
- A cold-blue palette with two warm notes — red roofs and dry grass against slate and indigo.
- Weather you can feel — wind-flattened grass and breaking surf, not a flat calm postcard sea.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
This is a cool, dark print, so it needs a light wall to breathe. White, chalk or pale grey suits it best, and it looks especially clean against the white panelled moulding shown in the photographs above. In a navy or deep blue room it turns almost tonal, which can be lovely in a bedroom. Natural oak framing lifts the ochre grass; black framing follows the darkest rock and suits a coastal-modern living room with linen and pale wood.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The hatching on the granite is fine work, so go up rather than down. 20" x 30" or 24" x 36" holds the rock texture and the surf; 12" x 18" suits a narrow hall or a stair gallery.
Does it come framed? Paper prints arrive rolled and unframed in standard US and A-series sizes. Framed canvas ships ready to hang in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
Is this Portland, Maine or Portland, Oregon? Maine. Portland Head Light stands on the headland at Cape Elizabeth, just south of Portland, Maine, on the Atlantic coast. It has no connection to Portland, Oregon, and the poster is lettered CAPE ELIZABETH and MAINE rather than with the lighthouse name.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
