A Nathan Phillips Square poster from the edge of the plaza: a wide field of pale paving in the foreground, the still reflecting pool beyond it, the three white concrete arches spanning the water, and the two curved towers of Toronto City Hall standing behind with the downtown bank towers to the right.
About the artwork
The most restrained composition in the Canada set, and the closest to pure mid-century poster design. It is built from four flat horizontal bands — speckled cream paving, turquoise water, white arches, then the city — with almost no small detail anywhere. The two City Hall towers are drawn as smooth curved slabs with fine window banding, and the tall bank tower beside them is a plain cream shaft with a chamfered top. Everything sits under a single flat turquoise sky. No people, no cars, no clutter. Title in white capitals, TORONTO above CANADA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Modernist architecture drawn as modernist design. Flat bands, hard edges, one accent colour — it suits the building it depicts.
- Calm on the wall. Almost nothing competes for attention, so it settles a busy room instead of adding to it.
- Turquoise and cream. A gentle, warm-cool pairing that works in bedrooms as easily as in an office.
- A civic memory. Skating the rink in winter, meeting under the arches in summer — most Torontonians have both.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Flat, graphic prints like this one look best with a clean frame and some breathing room around them — do not crowd it into a dense gallery wall. White or natural frames keep it airy; a thin black frame makes the bands read even harder. It is a good bedroom print and an excellent one for a modern office, where the turquoise is the only colour in the room.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What are the white arches? The concrete arches over the reflecting pool in Nathan Phillips Square, the plaza in front of Toronto City Hall.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
