A Mount Katahdin poster looking along the exposed rim: a single hiker with a red pack standing on the lip of a sheer cliff at the top right, the wall dropping several hundred feet into a glacial basin where a thin stream and a small tarn catch the light, snow still lying in the gullies, and a long green summit ridge closing the far side.
About the artwork
A painted illustration that leans on scale rather than colour — the rock is built from angular slab shapes in slate, teal-grey and blue shadow, while the basin floor and far ridge run through moss, olive and sage. Granite boulders in warm tan and pink fill the lower right corner with low green scrub between them. Above, a teal sky and stacked cream cumulus. The hiker is drawn at perhaps a fiftieth of the cliff's height, which is the whole idea. Three white lines sit at the base: MOUNT KATAHDIN, BAXTER STATE PARK, MAINE. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Exposure you can feel. The drop is drawn straight down from the figure's boots — there is no ledge, no softening.
- Glacial architecture. The bowl, the headwall and the tarn below are ice-carved, and the print shows all three in one frame.
- Baxter's own park. Percival Baxter bought this land privately and gave it to Maine to be kept wild, and the park still runs on day-use reservations rather than roadside conveniences.
- Maine's highest ground. Katahdin tops out just over 5,200 feet — modest by western standards, dramatic because it stands alone.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Grey-green and slate with warm granite pinks make this an easy neighbour for greige, stone and soft white walls, and it looks especially good against a muted green. Natural oak picks up the boulders; black frames sharpen the cliff edge. It suits a study, a stair wall or a hallway where you pass close enough to find the figure, and it sits well on the herringbone-floor and bookshelf settings shown above.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The hiker is tiny by design, so anything below 12" x 18" loses the figure. 20" x 30" or 24" x 36" keeps both the figure and the gully snow readable.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas comes in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Is this the end of the Appalachian Trail? Katahdin holds the trail's northern terminus, on Baxter Peak. The view drawn here is the cliff and basin country of the mountain rather than the summit sign itself.
What does the poster say? Three lines in white: MOUNT KATAHDIN, then BAXTER STATE PARK, then MAINE.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
