A Grayson Highlands State Park poster with one of the park's wild ponies as its subject. A chestnut pony with a pale flaxen mane stands on a grey rock outcrop at the edge of a high bald, head turned toward the viewer. Clumps of red rhododendron bloom in the boulder field around it, a windswept tree leans in from the left, and behind, the Virginia highlands roll away in bands of green and blue toward a distant peaked summit.
About the artwork
A rich painted illustration — the pony's coat is modelled with visible brushwork and the boulders carry lichen mottling and fracture lines rather than flat fills. The palette works chestnut and cream against cool grey granite, then steps through olive, moss and meadow green into the pale blue-grey of the receding ridges, with scarlet rhododendron as the one hot accent. The sky is a soft teal-blue with layered cream cumulus. Text is stacked in white sans-serif capitals across the lower left: GRAYSON HIGHLANDS, then STATE PARK, then a letter-spaced VIRGINIA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The ponies are the reason people go — a free-roaming herd on an Appalachian bald, and the print leads with one.
- An animal print that is still a landscape — works for horse people and hikers alike.
- Red against green — the rhododendron gives the composition a lift that most mountain prints lack.
- Trail memory — this stretch of bald is shared with the Appalachian Trail, so it reads for thru-hikers too.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Soft white, warm grey or pale sage walls keep the greens clean and let the chestnut pony read as the focal point. A natural oak or espresso frame ties to the coat colour; white frames make the whole thing feel airier. It fits the bench-and-sheer-curtain corner and the plant-heavy living room shown in the photographs above, and pairs well with wool, leather and a rug in muted red.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The pony holds the frame even at 12" x 18", so smaller sizes work in a hallway or gallery wall. Over a bed or sofa, 24" x 36" brings out the rhododendron and the ridge layers.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas ships in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? Three lines in white capitals at lower left: GRAYSON HIGHLANDS, STATE PARK, VIRGINIA.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
