A Gooderham Building poster looking straight at the point of the flatiron: the red brick wedge with its conical turret standing alone in the middle of the frame, blue glass towers rising on every side of it, and four red and cream streetcars working the intersection below.
About the artwork
A study in one colour against another. The flatiron is the only warm object in the print and it is drawn in full detail — arched windows, fire escapes, string courses, the copper-green cone on top — while everything behind it is reduced to cool blue-grey curtain wall, floor after floor, deliberately flat. At street level the red streetcars pick the brick colour back up and spread it across the bottom of the frame, with overhead wires strung between them and a few autumn trees at the left. Title in white capitals, TORONTO above CANADA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Old and new in one shot. An 1892 flatiron surrounded by glass — the single image that explains downtown Toronto.
- Streetcars. The red rockets are half the charm, and they carry the brick colour down to the bottom edge.
- Red against blue. Full complementary contrast, so the print reads instantly from the far side of a room.
- A recognisable address. Wellington and Church — the corner every Toronto photographer has stood on.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
This is the boldest print in the Canada set, so give it a plain wall and let it be the only strong thing on it. White and pale grey suit it best; a busy wallpaper will fight the red. Black frames sharpen it. In a living room it earns 24" x 36" or larger, where the streetcars and the fire escapes both stay legible.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What is the red building? The Gooderham Building, the wedge-shaped flatiron at Wellington and Church Street in downtown Toronto, finished in 1892.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
