This Funchal watercolor print shows the twin-towered Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte at the top of a long stone stairway, with red-roofed streets falling away to Funchal bay. It is an artistic, watercolor-style interpretation of Funchal, not an exact view of the city.
About the artwork
The white church is left almost as bare paper, outlined in dark basalt tones with brown-gray ink. Jacaranda and bougainvillea are dabbed in dense, blooming spots, the sea is a clear blue, and the left edge bleeds pink and violet with many long drips. Jacaranda purple, bougainvillea magenta, tropical green and sea blue make up the palette, with terracotta roofs and white walls as accents. The church sits left of center near the top, the town spreads down to the bay on the right with the Monte cable car and the harbor, and the foreground shows a Monte toboggan on the stone lane. The season is late spring, when the jacarandas are in flower. "FUNCHAL" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- Wicker toboggan ride. Two drivers in white with straw hats steer a basket sled carrying passengers.
- Cable car overhead. Small cabins hang on the line above the town, with a large cruise ship in port below.
- Jacaranda season. Purple jacaranda and tree ferns crowd the hillside in full color.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The purple, pink and blue palette brightens a guest room, a bedroom or a colorful entryway. It is a cheerful gift for someone who honeymooned on Madeira or simply loves island travel.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of Funchal? No. It is an artistic interpretation of Funchal that places the Monte church, the cable car and the bay together in one watercolor-style composition.
What text is printed on it? Only the city name, "FUNCHAL," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
