An Elk Island National Park poster from the edge of the aspen: two plains bison standing in a meadow of dry gold grass, white birch trunks framing the left of the frame, and the parkland rolling away past a lake to the Alberta prairie beyond.
About the artwork
One of only two prints in the Canada parks series with animals in it, and the bison carry the whole composition. They are painted with real weight — the heavy shoulder hump, the dense winter cape on the forelegs, the dark shine on the horns — and their deep chestnut brown is the only strong colour against a field of gold and olive. Behind them the aspen parkland is drawn in receding bands with more bison grazing as small dark shapes in the middle distance, then a pale lake, then the prairie. The birch trunks at the left edge are picked out with their black scars and give the print its depth.
The layout is the Canadian park service sheet used across this series, with the type in gold: cream border, small dark capitals along the top reading ALBERTA · 53.60° N, 112.86° W · EST 1913, and ELK ISLAND at the foot over NATIONAL PARK, with the Parks Canada wordmark and beaver roundel. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Bison you can actually see. Drawn large and close rather than as dots on a plain — the detail in the coat is the best part of the print.
- A conservation story. Elk Island's herd helped bring plains bison back from near extinction, and animals from here have restocked parks across the continent.
- Gold and olive. Warm enough to hang in a room where cool landscape prints feel cold.
- Coordinates on the sheet. 53.60° N, 112.86° W, established 1913.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Gold grass and chestnut brown make this a natural fit for leather, wool and warm wood — a study, a den, a cabin. Cream, camel and clay walls all suit it; a cold grey wall drains the meadow. Espresso and walnut frames suit the bison. It is the strongest animal print in the Canada set and works well on its own rather than in a grid.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Are those buffalo or bison? Plains bison. Elk Island protects one of the largest herds in Canada. The banner along the top gives the park's coordinates and its founding year, 1913.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
