A Needles Highway poster looking up the road as it curves toward one of the rock tunnels cut through the granite spires of Custer State Park. Double yellow lines run away from the viewer, pine shadows fall across warm tarmac, and two tall fins of pale rock close in on either side with the dark tunnel arch between them.
About the artwork
Hard-edged vector work with the granite built from long vertical striations and blocked shadow shapes. The palette is bone and cream stone with blue-grey and teal shadow in the fissures, a flat mid-blue sky, dark spruce and ponderosa green along both edges, and a road in warm grey-mauve with an orange-lit shoulder and a black tunnel mouth. Further spires stand in a paler, cooler grey on the right, giving the middle distance. The two yellow centre lines carry the eye straight through the composition. Printed type reads CUSTER in large white capitals with SOUTH DAKOTA letterspaced below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Made for anyone who has driven it — the tunnels and switchbacks are the reason people remember this road.
- A road that pulls you in — the receding centre lines give the print real depth from across a room.
- Cool stone, warm asphalt — the pale granite and the sunlit road balance each other rather than competing.
- Vertical by nature — the spires suit a tall, narrow wall that most landscape prints cannot fill.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — stretched canvas in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Cream granite and cool blue make this an easy print for pale rooms. On the plain white wall and the beige console setting in the photographs above it stays light and open. In the sage green room the pines pick the wall colour up directly. A natural oak frame suits the warm road tones; a white frame keeps the whole thing airy in a bedroom or a stairwell.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The tall spires reward height, so 18" x 27" or 24" x 36" works well on a narrow wall between doors or beside a staircase. Over a sofa, 30" x 40" lets the tunnel mouth and the road markings read from the far side of the room.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas is stretched and set in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, with hanging hardware fitted.
What does the poster say? Only two lines: CUSTER in large white capitals, with SOUTH DAKOTA letterspaced beneath it. The road and tunnel shown are on the Needles Highway inside Custer State Park, but that name is not printed on the artwork.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
