A Buttermilk Falls State Park poster looking straight up the gorge from the swimming hole. This is a slide, not a plunge — the creek runs down a long inclined slab of bedrock in a wide white sheet, then breaks into four or five stepped shelves near the bottom and spills into a clear green pool. Layered rust-coloured shale walls hold the gorge on both sides, thick with hemlock and hardwood.
About the artwork
Painted in fine layers rather than flat vector shapes. The water is drawn as combed vertical threads on the upper slab and as separate small falls over each lower shelf, so the two behave differently. The rock is the thing that makes this print: strata are ruled in horizontal courses, dozens deep, in salmon, terracotta, warm grey and dark umber where the shale is wet. Against that, six greens — near-black hemlock at the edges, mid-forest green on the gorge rim, bright olive and moss on the sunlit ledges. The base pool is a clear jade that pales to turquoise over gravel. Cream cumulus stacks in a pale blue gap at the top of the gorge. Lettering runs across the bottom in white condensed capitals: BUTTERMILK FALLS, with STATE PARK and NEW YORK below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A cascade, not a curtain — the water slides down open rock the whole way, which is what gives Buttermilk its name and its look.
- The rock is the character — stacked shale courses in rust and salmon, more layered here than in any of the other Finger Lakes gorges.
- That pool at the bottom — the natural swimming hole at the base is right there in the foreground, not cropped out.
- Warm rock, cool water — terracotta ledges against jade green means this print carries colour without needing a bright accent.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The salmon and terracotta shale means this one likes a warm wall — cream, oat, clay or a soft terracotta — rather than a cool grey, which would leave the greens looking flat. Natural oak echoes the rock; espresso deepens the hemlocks. The living room with the cream sofa and terracotta cushions in the photographs above is close to the palette it was made for.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The ruled shale courses are the best part of this print and they need scale, so 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" on a main wall. 16" x 24" still holds the cascade and the pool.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and rolled. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang in white, black, espresso or natural.
How is this different from your other New York waterfall prints? Buttermilk Falls is a long open slide over stepped shale, ending in a swimming pool at road level. That is a different shape of falls from the deep narrow gorge walkways or the tall single plunges in our other Finger Lakes and central New York prints. The poster names Buttermilk Falls, State Park and New York, and nothing else.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
