A Buttermilk Falls State Park poster looking straight up the gorge from the swimming hole. About the artwork

Painted in fine layers rather than flat vector shapes. The water is drawn as combed vertical threads on the upper slab and as separate small falls over each lower shelf, so the two behave differently. The rock is the thing that makes this print: strata are ruled in horizontal courses, dozens deep, in salmon, terracotta, warm grey and dark umber where the shale is wet. Against that, six greens — near-black hemlock at the edges, mid-forest green on the gorge rim, bright olive and moss on the sunlit ledges. The base pool is a clear jade that pales to turquoise over gravel. Cream cumulus stacks in a pale blue gap at the top of the gorge. Lettering runs across the bottom in white condensed capitals: BUTTERMILK FALLS, with STATE PARK and NEW YORK below. Portrait, 2:3.
