This Alcatraz Island watercolor print shows the island's long cellhouse, white lighthouse and water tower across San Francisco Bay, with the Golden Gate Bridge small in the distance. It is an artistic, watercolor-style interpretation of the bay, not an exact view.
About the artwork
Fine ink lines draw the rows of cellhouse windows, the lighthouse, the water tower and the rocky cliffs, and the bay is built from many layered turquoise strokes with white paper left as whitecaps. Green and violet washes drip from the lower left corner, and splatter fades into a white paper border. The palette is led by turquoise water, with cypress green and ochre cliffs, and a touch of orange-red from the distant Golden Gate Bridge. The island sits in the middle ground, seen from a raised view near Fisherman's Wharf looking north across the bay, with wooden piers, a gray-roofed pier building and a docked tour boat in the left foreground and the Marin hills behind. It is summer, with green slopes and a few soft clouds. "SAN FRANCISCO" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- Ferry to the island. A white ferry heads toward Alcatraz while gulls skim the water.
- Lively bay water. Layered turquoise strokes and whitecaps fill a large part of the print.
- Golden Gate glimpse. The bridge appears small and red-orange on the far left horizon.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The turquoise and green palette is a natural fit for a coastal living room, a bathroom or an office with white or sandy tones. It suits a history buff, or anyone who took the ferry out to the island on a San Francisco trip. Pair it with our San Francisco watercolor print for a two-piece set.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of Alcatraz Island? No. It is an artistic interpretation of the view across the bay, and the viewpoint and some details are simplified.
What text is printed on it? Only the city name, "SAN FRANCISCO," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
Paper weight, inks, frame details and care are all in our Material Guide.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
