The safest housewarming wall art gift is a print that meets three conditions: a palette that sits quietly against most wall colours, a subject the person already has a connection to (a park they hiked, the city they just moved to), and a mid-range size such as 12" x 18" that fits a hallway, a bedroom or a kitchen wall. Below are twenty prints that pass all three, sorted by room, from $26.
Why a print is the low-risk housewarming gift
People move into blank walls. The US Census Bureau counted about 28.2 million movers in 2022, an 8.7% mover rate, and the single most common reason given was wanting a newer, better or larger home (Census Bureau, Why People Move). A bigger home means more wall, most of it empty for months while the furniture gets sorted out. A framed print is one of the few housewarming gifts that solves a problem the new owner has.
It also avoids the two classic gift failures. A candle or a bottle gets used up and forgotten; a vase, a lamp or a set of towels has to match a style you have not seen yet. A print needs a nail, and it moves from the hallway to the bedroom to the office as the house fills in.
Price is the last argument. A paper print at 12" x 18" costs $33; a ready-to-hang framed canvas at 18" x 12" costs $110. Both sit inside the range people spend on a housewarming gift.
Three rules that take the gamble out of it
1. Choose a palette, not a colour
You do not know the wall colour, so pick prints whose palettes are built from wall colours: blue-grey, sage, terracotta, warm sand, cream. The Bryce Canyon National Park Watercolor Art Print is coral, apricot and plateau blue; the Hidden Valley Joshua Tree print is apricot rock, warm sand and a lavender horizon. Both read as calm on white, grey, beige or sage walls. Avoid a print built on one loud hue, because that only works on one wall in the house.
2. Choose a place, not a picture
The print that gets hung first is the one with a story: the park from the trip where they got engaged, the city they have just left. That is why fifteen of the twenty prints below are places, and why we lean on the US national parks wall art range so heavily. Great Smoky Mountains alone had more than 12 million recreational visits in 2024, the most of any national park (NPS park statistics), so the odds that your friend has been there are good.
3. Choose a size that fits anywhere
Most housewarming gifts fail on size, not taste. A 24" x 36" print is a commitment to one wall; a 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" print fits a hallway, a bedroom or the wall beside the fridge, and can be grouped with a second print later. The table below is the version we use when we do not know the room; the measurements and hanging heights behind it are in our size guide.
| If you know nothing about the room | Size to give | Material | Paper price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe default, any wall | 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm) | Paper, unframed | $33 |
| They have a big empty living room | 16" x 24" (41 x 61 cm) | Paper or framed canvas | $40 paper · $155 framed canvas |
| Kitchen or hallway | 12" x 16" or A3 | Paper, unframed | $31 · A3 $33 |
| Above a sofa or bed (you have seen it) | 24" x 36" (61 x 91 cm) | Framed canvas | $55 paper · $250 framed canvas |
| Horizontal print above a sofa | 24" x 16" or 36" x 24" | Paper or framed canvas | $40 · $55 paper |
Twenty housewarming prints that work in almost any home
Every print here is made to order on archival matte paper, with matte canvas and framed canvas options, and every one starts at $26. The descriptions are of the artwork itself, so you know what you are sending.
For the living room
- Great Smoky Mountains Oil Painting Wall Art — Blue ridge after blue ridge fading into haze, dense green forest in the middle distance and pink catawba rhododendron in bloom at the front, reproduced from a thick impasto oil painting with the palette-knife texture printed in. Horizontal 3:2, made for a sofa, bed or mantel; 24" x 16" is $40.
- Grand Canyon National Park Horizontal Wall Art — Layers of red, cream and green rock stepping down into shadow, the Colorado River a narrow turquoise ribbon at the bottom, drawn in the flat-colour language of the 1930s WPA posters. Grand Canyon was established in 1919; horizontal, so it sits above furniture without crowding it.
- Grand Teton National Park Horizontal Wall Art — The old Moulton barn low in the sagebrush, its tin roof gone silver, and straight behind it the Tetons coming up out of the valley floor without foothills. Same 1930s poster language and 3:2 shape as the Grand Canyon print, so the two hang as a pair; the park dates from 1929.
- Bryce Canyon National Park Watercolor Art Print — Coral and orange hoodoos glowing in early sun, Thor's Hammer standing clear of the amphitheatre, painted in transparent watercolour glazes with no lettering or border. The warmest print in this list.
- Hidden Valley Joshua Tree Wall Art — A sandy basin dotted with Joshua trees running back to the lavender Pinto Mountains, a wall of apricot boulders on the right and a flat cerulean sky. The coordinates 33.79 N, 115.90 W along the bottom are what people notice first.
- Rocky Mountain National Park Poster — A granite peak over an alpine lake with the aspens already gold, in a tight retro palette with lettering you can read across a room. Rocky Mountain was established in 1915.
- Glacier National Park Poster — A sharp horn peak above an alpine lake and beargrass meadow in alpine green, snowcap white and lake teal, with the National Park Service arrowhead badge at the base. Glacier dates from 1910; this is the print for a lodge-style living room or a cabin.
For the bedroom
- Acadia National Park Classical Oil Painting — Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse above pink granite ledges, the last warm light raking across the rock and the Atlantic breaking white below, painted in the smooth, blended manner of the nineteenth-century landscape painters. Horizontal 3:2: the one print here that reads as a painting first and a place second.
- Crater Lake National Park Watercolor Art Print — Wizard Island low in the middle of the caldera, its cinder cone dusted with snow, in water of an almost impossible blue, with the far rim rising in snow-streaked cliffs. The lake is laid in as one unbroken blue wash, and the print carries no lettering or border: the calmest palette in the guide.
- Shenandoah National Park Illustrated Print — Blue ridges receding behind a wildflower overlook in flat vector shapes, each range a shade paler and bluer than the one in front, with mustard grass and small red and white blooms at the bottom edge. The header reads SHENANDOAH / NATIONAL PARK · VIRGINIA · EST 1935.
For the new kitchen
- Checkered Lemons Print — Two lemons crossed at the stem, each filled with a yellow checkerboard, against wide vertical stripes of sky blue and cream with a white four-point sparkle on each. Blue and yellow lift a kitchen that does not get much sun.
- Bon Appetit Print — A retro produce print drawn as a postage stamp: a yellow perforated border, a cluster of orange tomatoes on the vine and "Bon appetit!" in loose script. It reads as a market stall rather than a recipe, and works small, at A4.
- Free Range Eggs Print — Three pale green egg cartons stacked one on top of the other, drawn flat, with EGGS, FREE-RANGE and LARGE printed across them. Green on a deeper green ground: a near-tonal palette that reads as considered rather than cheerful.
- Bonjour Cafe Print — A mustard yellow moka pot beside a cobalt blue cup of coffee, outlined in dark brown inside a hand-drawn border, with Bonjour! above and Café? below. Three flat colours do all the work.
- Strawberries Print — Flat red strawberries scattered at a steady spacing over bold blue and cream stripes that run the full height of the page. The cool ground stops a red fruit print tipping into sweetness.
All five share the same cream ground and paper, so any two line up as a set; the rest of the series is in kitchen wall art.
For the city they moved to (or from)
- Painted Ladies, San Francisco California Travel Wall Art — Six Victorian row houses on Steiner Street in pink, teal, ochre, powder blue and cream, seen from the Alamo Square lawn. Because the top half is cool blue and the bottom half green, it settles on white, grey or sage walls.
- Big Sur, California Travel Wall Art — The Bixby Creek bridge and the coast road seen from the wildflower slope above, chrome-yellow flowers against sapphire and cobalt sea. This is the turnout view people stop at on the drive, and the print that says "the road you took to get here".
- Denver, Colorado Travel Wall Art — Downtown Denver seen from a city park across a still lake, glass towers in a tight cluster with the snowcapped Front Range rising behind them. Flat vector planes in mid-blue, teal, warm sand and apricot.
- Brooklyn Bridge, New York City Travel Wall Art — Straight down the wooden promenade to the granite tower, its two gothic arches open onto the skyline and the suspender cables fanning out in a symmetrical web. Peach, terracotta and tan on the masonry, teal overhead, navy in the East River below.
All four belong to the USA travel wall art series, which covers most of the cities people move between; one print of the old city and one of the new, hung side by side, is the housewarming gift that gets talked about.
For the hallway or the home office
- North Cascades National Park Mid-Century Modern Art Print — The unreal turquoise of Diablo Lake between steep evergreen slopes, serrated snow-capped peaks at the head of the valley, drawn as flat vector planes with hard colour blocking, closer to Swiss poster design than to landscape painting. The title runs above National Park • Washington • Est 1968: a hallway or a desk wall is where that much lettering earns its keep.
Match the print to the room they are still furnishing
If you have seen the house, use the room to choose. The living room wall art collection is sorted for exactly this, and the pairings below are the ones we would send.
| Room | Size and finish | Why it works there | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room, long sofa wall | Great Smoky Mountains oil painting · Grand Teton horizontal | 36" x 24" framed canvas, walnut or natural | Horizontal 3:2 anchors a sofa wall |
| Living room, no sofa yet | Grand Canyon horizontal | 24" x 16" paper | Leans on the floor and still looks placed |
| Bedroom | Bryce Canyon watercolour · Crater Lake watercolour · Acadia classical oil | 16" x 24" paper, oak frame | No lettering, calm above a headboard |
| Hallway or entry | Rocky Mountain retro · Glacier WPA · North Cascades mid-century | 12" x 18" paper | Matched park posters in a narrow space read as a set |
| Kitchen wall between cabinets | Checkered Lemons · Bon Appetit tomato stamp · Free Range Eggs | 12" x 16" or A3 paper, oak frame | Small, bright, same cream ground |
| Home office | Painted Ladies, Big Sur, Denver or Brooklyn Bridge | 16" x 24" paper, black frame | Gives a desk wall a destination |
Give a pair, not a single print
Two prints in the same size and frame are a stronger housewarming gift than one bigger print: a pair tells the new owner where to hang them (together, a hand-width apart) and a single print asks them to decide. The discount is automatic, not a code. Two prints in one order take 7% off, three or more take 10% off. Two 12" x 18" paper prints come to $61.38 instead of $66; three come to $89.10 instead of $99.
Four pairs that we know work, because the palettes were built to sit together:
- Two Utah and Colorado parks — Bryce Canyon watercolour with the Rocky Mountain retro poster: coral and orange beside teal and gold, both vertical 2:3.
- The kitchen pair — Checkered Lemons with the Bon Appetit tomato stamp: sky blue and yellow beside yellow and orange, on the same cream ground.
- The moving pair — Brooklyn Bridge with Denver: the city they left beside the city they moved to, both 2:3, same flat vector style.
- The California pair — Painted Ladies with Big Sur: city and coast, both lettered, both 2:3.
Keep the frames and mats identical, and hang the pair with the centres at about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor, the gallery standard. That rule makes a pair of $33 prints look like a set.
For a hallway or a stair landing, go to three or four. Park posters in the same format share a border and a lettering style, so they read as one piece. The four below, two over two in matching black frames, are the Rocky Mountain retro print, the Glacier WPA print, the Great Smoky Mountains Charlies Bunion print and the Zion vintage travel poster. At 12" x 18" each, three posters come to $89.10 and four to $118.80 with the automatic 10% off.
Timing it for the housewarming
Every print is made to order: printed within 3–5 business days, then shipped. Shipping is free in the US and $5 everywhere else. For a housewarming on a Saturday, order by the Monday of the previous week and you have margin. If you are cutting it closer, ship paper rather than framed canvas: the tube moves faster, and the new owner can choose a frame that matches furniture they have not bought yet.
If the print arrives after the party, that is fine: one that turns up in the second week, when the boxes are gone and the walls are suddenly obvious, often gets hung faster. Details on sizes, framing and how the paper ships are in the FAQ.

Housewarming gift FAQ
Is wall art a good housewarming gift?
Yes, if it is chosen to fit rather than to impress. A print with a calm palette, a place the person has a connection to, and a mid-range size like 12" x 18" (about 30 x 46 cm) works in almost any room, and an unframed paper print from $26 lets them pick the frame that matches their furniture.
What size print should I give for a new home?
12" x 18" or 16" x 24" for a vertical print, 18" x 12" or 24" x 16" for a horizontal one. Those sizes fit a hallway, a bedroom wall or a kitchen wall and can still be grouped later. Go to 24" x 36" only if you know the print is headed above a sofa or a bed.
Should I give it framed or unframed?
Unframed paper is the safer gift: it ships rolled in a tube, costs from $26, and the new owner chooses a frame that suits the room. A ready-to-hang framed canvas (from $108 at 12" x 16") is the better choice when you know the room and want them to hang it the day it arrives.
How long does a print take to arrive?
Every print is made to order and printed within 3–5 business days, then shipped. Shipping is free in the US and $5 elsewhere. Order about two weeks before the housewarming to be comfortable.
Is there a discount for buying more than one print?
Yes, and it is automatic. Two prints in one order take 7% off, three or more take 10% off, with no code to enter.
