A Zaanse Schans poster from down among the reeds: a line of green timber windmills standing along the riverbank with their sails caught at different angles, and tall seed-headed grasses filling the whole right-hand foreground.
About the artwork
The design is built on a diagonal. The reeds start at the bottom right corner and sweep up and to the left, drawn stalk by stalk in gold, olive and pale straw, their feathery seed heads all leaning one way as though the wind has been steady for hours. A sandy track shows through them at the very bottom. Water enters from the left as a flat blue plane, ruled with short horizontal ripple marks and a little cloud reflection. Along the far edge of the bank the mills recede one behind another: the nearest is large and fully drawn, its green weatherboarded body, dark cap, wooden gallery, ladder and stage all there, with pale lattice sails; those behind grow smaller and simpler until the last is close to a silhouette against the treeline. Low green sheds sit between them. The sky is pale turquoise with long streaks of thin white cloud. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Netherlands beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Reeds in the foreground. The grasses take as much of the sheet as the mills do and give the design its movement.
- Mills in perspective. They step back along the bank one behind another instead of lining up flat.
- Gold, green and blue. A warm foreground against a cool river and a cooler sky.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The gold in the reeds makes it warmer than most Dutch scenes, so it suits cream, sand and olive walls as readily as white ones. It sits well with rattan, dried grasses, wool and light oak, and a natural oak frame echoes the mill timber, while black sharpens the sails against the sky. Hang it beside the Gouda or Haarlem prints for a Dutch group, or with Ostend for a low-country pairing.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Are the windmills drawn individually? They are. The nearest shows its weatherboarding, gallery and ladder, while those further along the bank simplify into silhouettes.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
