A West Virginia state flower print issued as a 1¢ stamp that never existed: WEST VIRGINIA struck across the top in worn letterpress, one woody rhododendron branch carrying five blooms engraved at the centre, and The Mountain State set below the frame.
About the artwork
Crimson on pink, one ink throughout. Five funnel-shaped flowers ride a single woody stem, the branch drawn thick and slightly crooked so the plant reads as a shrub rather than a cut stalk, and every bloom pushes its stamens out past the mouth of the funnel. A fern ornament fills the lower-left corner and the 1¢ denomination sits in a circle opposite. The perforated edge is drawn as real die-cut scallops on a plain cream sheet, so the stamp sits on the page as an object. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The branch stays in. Keeping the woody stem gives the plate a spine, so the five blooms hang off a real plant instead of floating on the page.
- A silhouette that survives shrinking. One branch and five flowers is a simple shape, which is why the small sizes — A4, 8" x 12" — stay legible instead of turning to mush.
- Built as a set of fifty. Every state shares the same frame, denomination and typography, so any combination lines up.
- A gift for someone from West Virginia. Home state on the wall, without souvenir kitsch.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Against oatmeal, greige or a warm plaster wall the crimson stops reading as pink and starts reading as brick, which is the easiest way to place this plate in an ordinary room. Wool, jute and a mid-brown oak sit under it well, and a thin black frame sharpens the line where a natural frame would let it drift. It is a good corridor and stairwell print at 12" x 18" or 16" x 24", where you pass it close and the stamens and the crooked branch are worth seeing at arm's length. Stacked two high with another state at the same size, it turns a narrow wall into a small grid without needing a third print to balance it.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console, desk or shelf, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Can I collect more than one state? Yes. All fifty share one format and one denomination, so any combination hangs as a matched set.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
Paper weight, inks, frame details and care are all in our Material Guide.

Damage, defects & care
Every piece is printed for you after you order, so we cannot take a print back for a change of mind — please check the size and material first. Our Size Guide shows every size drawn to scale.
If it arrives damaged, misprinted or simply wrong, email us within 14 days with photos of the piece and the packaging. We reprint and reship it free, and there is nothing to send back.
Keep artwork out of direct sunlight. Dust paper prints with a clean, dry cloth; wipe canvas and framed canvas gently with a clean, damp cloth. Handle paper prints by the edges until they are framed. More care tips are in our Material Guide.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
