A Watkins Glen State Park poster drawn from the floor of the gorge, looking upstream. A stone arch bridge spans the narrow cut overhead, a flight of cut-stone steps climbs the shaded left wall, and the stream drops in a wide sheet of white water across the bottom of the frame into a still teal pool. Layered shale ledges stack up on both sides, and daylight breaks through the tree canopy at the far end of the glen.
About the artwork
Illustrated in flat, hard-edged colour blocks that build the rock as dozens of thin horizontal bands, so the shale reads as stratified stone rather than texture. The palette is mossy green and olive in the overhanging foliage, warm tan and grey-buff in the ledges, rust-orange along the wet seams, deep teal in the pool and near-black in the shaded undercuts. Details carried through: the mortared voussoirs of the arch, the iron rail beside the stair, ferns rooted in the wall and pale spray at the lip of the falls. The title sits in white spaced capitals across the sky, WATKINS GLEN above NEW YORK. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The gorge, not just a waterfall — stone bridge, stair-cut walls and pool together, the way the Gorge Trail actually feels.
- Deep green and stone — a cool, shaded palette that calms a warm or busy room.
- Layered rock as pattern — the banded shale gives the print structure that holds up at large sizes.
- For Finger Lakes walkers — anyone who has climbed the 800-odd steps past the nineteen waterfalls will recognise this exact bend.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The greens and wet stone tones settle naturally against a sage or clay wall, and the sage green room in the photographs above shows how close the artwork sits to that family. On a plain white wall the light oak frame keeps the tan ledges warm; a black frame deepens the shadowed undercuts and suits a study or a reading corner. It also pairs well with rattan, linen and unglazed pottery.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The banded rock rewards scale, so 24" x 36" over a sofa or bed shows the strata properly. For a hallway or a stairwell, 16" x 24" works well.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The printed lettering reads WATKINS GLEN with NEW YORK below it. The state park name is not printed on the artwork itself.
How is this different from Taughannock Falls? Taughannock is a single free-falling column of water dropping into an open stone amphitheatre. Watkins Glen is a walking gorge, a narrow shale canyon with nineteen waterfalls, cut stone stairs and stone bridges, which is what this print shows.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
