About the artwork

An exercise in order. The gardens are drawn as true geometry — box parterres, gravel paths, statuary and fountain basins all set out in symmetry — and the palace roofline repeats that discipline above them. The palette is deliberately cool and pale: cream and bone for the stone, oxidised copper green on every dome and roof, and a full range of greens in the planting from clipped box to weeping willow. A wide band of pale duck-egg sky sits above, with the spires of the inner city small on the horizon. Statues and urns are picked out individually along the terraces.
