A Turnagain Arm Alaska poster looking down the inlet from the shoreline road. A single wave curls and breaks across the foreground, throwing spray over a gravel and boulder beach. Behind it the Chugach mountains drop straight into the water in a long receding wall, their upper slopes still snow-filled, dark spruce holding the nearest headland. A bald eagle glides across the middle of the sky.
About the artwork
The painting works in layered, hard-lit shapes with visible brush texture in the surf and cloud. Its palette is built almost entirely from blues — steel blue in the rock faces, deeper navy in the wave trough, pale ice blue across the snowfields — lifted by cream and warm gold in the cumulus stack on the left, where the light is coming from. The spruce read as near-black green, and a thin strip of tundra gold runs along the shoreline. Type at the base of the print reads TURNAGAIN ARM in heavy condensed capitals with ALASKA letterspaced beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The wave is the subject — Turnagain Arm is known for its bore tide, and this print puts the breaking water in the front of the frame rather than a flat inlet view.
- Mountains that fall into the sea — the Chugach wall along the Seward Highway is drawn as one continuous receding ridge.
- An eagle without the kitsch — small, high and off-centre, used for scale rather than as a mascot.
- A cool blue scheme — easy to live with in a room that already has warm wood and textiles.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Steel blue and cream sit well against warm white, greige and pale camel walls, and the gold in the clouds keeps it from feeling cold beside oak or rattan. In a room with navy or dark green paint the snow and surf carry the contrast on their own. In the photographs above, the natural wood frame warms the blues; a white frame pushes it toward a cleaner coastal look.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The eagle and the far ridgeline are small details, so 18" x 24" or larger suits a main wall. For a hallway or a stair run, 12" x 18" is enough since the wave still reads at a glance.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, with hanging hardware fitted.
Is this the same as Tracy Arm? No. Turnagain Arm is a shallow tidal inlet southeast of Anchorage, famous for one of the largest tidal ranges in North America and for its bore tide, which is the wave in this print. Tracy Arm is a deep glacier-carved fjord near Juneau, hundreds of miles away, and is a separate design.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
