About the artwork

The painting works in layered, hard-lit shapes with visible brush texture in the surf and cloud. Its palette is built almost entirely from blues — steel blue in the rock faces, deeper navy in the wave trough, pale ice blue across the snowfields — lifted by cream and warm gold in the cumulus stack on the left, where the light is coming from. The spruce read as near-black green, and a thin strip of tundra gold runs along the shoreline. Is this the same as Tracy Arm? No. Turnagain Arm is a shallow tidal inlet southeast of Anchorage, famous for one of the largest tidal ranges in North America and for its bore tide, which is the wave in this print. Tracy Arm is a deep glacier-carved fjord near Juneau, hundreds of miles away, and is a separate design.
