A Torshavn travel poster looking across the sound to the old headland: a huddle of oxblood-red timber houses with grass growing on their roofs, standing on black basalt rock above a dark, glittering sea.
About the artwork
A cool, low-contrast picture built almost entirely from teal, black-green and one strong red. The houses sit as a tight cluster on the rocky point, all gable ends and small white-framed windows, every roof carpeted in thick turf that hangs slightly over the eaves. The largest building at the right takes a dark slate roof instead, with a squared tower, a short spire and a thin mast above it, and a whitewashed stone base underneath. Behind them, headlands and mountain ridges stack back in flattening greens until they dissolve into pale mist, with a small island out to the left. The right foreground is wet basalt — angular blocks streaked with moss and dark weed — sloping into the water. The sea takes the whole left and bottom: deep teal cut by a long trail of gold sun sparkle, with white surf breaking at the rocks. Titled Tórshavn in wide-tracked uppercase with Faroe Islands beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Grass roofs. Turf pulled right over the timber — the detail that says Faroes and nothing else.
- One red against all that teal. A small warm cluster in a cold picture, which is why it holds the eye.
- Layered headlands. Ridges fading into sea mist give real distance behind the houses.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Darker and moodier than most coastal prints, so it suits a snug, a study or a north-facing room rather than a bright one. Deep green, ink blue and charcoal walls make the red houses glow; on plain white it looks colder and more graphic. Wool throws, dark stained wood and pewter or blackened metal are the right neighbours. A black frame is the obvious choice, and espresso works if the room already runs warm. Hang it with the Akureyri print for a north Atlantic pair.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Why are the roofs green? They are traditional turf roofs — living grass laid over birch bark and timber, still used on the old houses of the harbour quarter.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
