A Thor's Well illustrated print caught mid-drain on the Cape Perpetua shelf. Seawater slides over the lip of the hole in smooth ribbed sheets and disappears into the dark, while foam runs in white channels across the pitted basalt around it. Breakers stack up behind, and the wooded headland with a single clifftop house runs out to a low grey horizon.
About the artwork
Painted with a lot of surface information. The basalt is worked in fine wrinkled ridges so the rock reads as pocked and wet rather than smooth, and the water sheeting into the well is drawn in dozens of parallel strokes that bend over the rim. Foam is stippled rather than flat white. The sky is the other half of the picture: heavy slate and charcoal cloud broken by warm cream light along the seaward edge. Colour stays cool throughout, seafoam green through steel blue into brown-black rock, with only that band of pale gold behind the headland. White lettering sits at the foot: THOR'S WELL above a letterspaced OREGON. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Motion, not a still sea. The whole composition is built around water being pulled downward, which almost no coastal print does.
- Weather with mood. Storm cloud with a warm break in it, rather than a blue-sky beach scene.
- Texture underfoot. The ridged, tide-worn basalt in the foreground is drawn in as carefully as the sky.
- A small human note. One house on the bluff sets the scale of the headland without crowding the image.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Slate, seafoam and brown-black make this a calm, moody piece rather than a bright coastal one. It works against charcoal, deep green and warm grey walls, and looks right in a study or a bedroom where a cheerful beach print would not. Black framing sharpens the storm cloud; natural oak warms it and picks up the rock, as in the reading-corner photograph above.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The well itself sits low in the frame, so give the sky room. 18" x 24" works over a desk; 24" x 36" lets the ribbed rock texture and the cloud structure both come through.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives stretched in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Why are there two Thor's Well prints? Because we drew this spot twice in two different styles. The other is flat vector work built from clean colour shapes with the place name across the top of the image. This is the painted version, with ridged rock texture, brushed water, heavy cloud modelling and the title along the bottom edge.
What does the print say? THOR'S WELL in bold capitals at the base, with OREGON spaced out beneath it.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
