Thor's Well, Oregon Illustrated Travel Wall Art

A Thor's Well illustrated print caught mid-drain on the Cape Perpetua shelf. Seawater slides over the lip of the hole in smooth ribbed sheets and disappears into the dark, while foam runs in white channels across the pitted basalt around it. Breakers stack up behind, and the wooded headland with a single clifftop house runs out to a low grey horizon.

About the artwork

Painted with a lot of surface information. The basalt is worked in fine wrinkled ridges so the rock reads as pocked and wet rather than smooth, and the water sheeting into the well is drawn in dozens of parallel strokes that bend over the rim. Foam is stippled rather than flat white. The sky is the other half of the picture: heavy slate and charcoal cloud broken by warm cream light along the seaward edge. Colour stays cool throughout, seafoam green through steel blue into brown-black rock, with only that band of pale gold behind the headland. White lettering sits at the foot: THOR'S WELL above a letterspaced OREGON. Portrait, 2:3.
