A The Wave Coyote Buttes poster looking straight down the sandstone trough that gives the formation its name. Fine bands of rock sweep from the lower right into the hollow at the centre, curl up the fin on the left and break over the ridge behind it. Fins and domes stand on both sides, small green shrubs cling to the sand pockets, and a low mesa closes the gap in the middle distance under a deep blue sky.
About the artwork
The whole print is built from linework: hundreds of thin parallel strokes following the cross-bedding of the Navajo sandstone, so the rock reads as flowing layers rather than a painted surface. The palette is narrow and warm - apricot, salmon, terracotta and rust, with cream and pale buff in the lighter bands and a few deep brown seams cutting across the trough. Sage-green shrubs and a strong cobalt sky with white cumulus are the only cool notes. Type sits at the base in white capitals: THE WAVE, then COYOTE BUTTES NORTH, then ARIZONA-UTAH. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Rock that moves. The striations do the work of a composition - everything in the frame is pulled toward the centre of the trough.
- A genuinely rare view. Very few people stand here in any given year, which makes it an unusual thing to have on a wall.
- Warm without being loud. The whole palette sits inside apricot and rust, so it reads as one colour family from across a room.
- Detail that holds up large. Printed big, the individual sandstone lines stay separate rather than blurring into flat orange.
Sizes and materials
- Paper - archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas - stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas - solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Apricot and rust against cobalt is a warm, high-contrast pairing that lifts a cool room. It looks best on warm white, plaster pink or clay walls, and beside natural materials - linen, rattan, unglazed terracotta. Above a cream sofa with terracotta cushions, like the room in the photographs above, the sandstone tones repeat in the textiles. A white or natural oak frame keeps the print bright; espresso deepens the rust and suits a darker room.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The linework is the whole point, so go larger where you can. 18" x 24" is a comfortable minimum and 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" lets the striations stay crisp.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives stretched in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The caption reads THE WAVE on the first line, COYOTE BUTTES NORTH below it, and ARIZONA-UTAH in smaller spaced capitals underneath.
Can I go and see it? Only with a permit, and they are genuinely hard to get. Coyote Buttes North is a lottery-only permit area with a very small daily quota, so the great majority of applicants are turned down, often for years running. The formation itself sits on the Arizona side of the state line in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, with the approach coming in from the Utah side. This is a print for people who won the draw, or who admire the place from a distance.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
