A York Shambles travel poster looking down the lane: timber-framed shopfronts leaning in from both sides with their upper floors overhanging so far they nearly meet, a slot of blue sky left between them, and a cobbled street running away in strong afternoon light.
About the artwork
A study in one narrow space. The left side is almost entirely in shadow — deep brown timber, cool cream render, dark bay windows — and the right side takes full sun in bone, honey and pale gold, so the street reads as a corridor of light between two dark walls. The jettied upper floors are drawn with their sagging beams and out-of-true window frames, which is what gives the buildings their age; nothing here is straight. Underfoot the cobbles and flagstones are laid in individually and catch the sun in a long tapering wedge that leads the eye to the bend at the far end. Small red pantiles punctuate the roofline. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with England beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Light down a dark street. The sunlit wedge of cobbles is the whole composition.
- Nothing is straight. The leaning timbers are drawn out of true on purpose, and that is the character.
- Warm and enclosed. An intimate print in a series full of wide views.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Honey, brown and one small slot of blue — a warm, low-contrast print that suits cream, clay and olive walls and looks right beside leather and dark wood. Because the composition draws inward it works particularly well in a narrow space such as a hallway or a stair wall, where the corridor in the picture echoes the corridor you are standing in. Walnut and espresso frames suit it best.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Where is the view from? Standing at one end of the lane, looking down it toward the bend with the sun on the right-hand side.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
