A Starved Rock State Park poster taken from the floor of one of the park's sandstone canyons along the Illinois River. A single ribbon of water slips off a shelf high on the far wall and lands in a shallow, sunlit pool. Layered bluffs close in on both sides, oaks crowd the rim overhead, and rounded stones break the surface of the creek in the foreground.
About the artwork
Screen-print style illustration built from stacked flat shapes, with visible posterised banding in the rock and short broken strokes for the ripples. The palette is a narrow band of earth colours: pale bone and buff on the sunlit sandstone, olive and deep moss in the shaded walls, warm ochre reflections in the water and a small wedge of pale blue sky at the top. Details worth finding: the horizontal bedding lines cut into the bluff, the fern and moss growth clinging to the rim, and the stepping stones scattered across the creek bed. Typography is white sans-serif reading STARVED ROCK over ILLINOIS, set into the sky between the canyon walls. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The canyon, not the overlook — the view is from inside the gorge looking up at the falls.
- Quiet earth palette — bone, olive and ochre sit calmly next to wood furniture and neutral walls.
- Illinois beyond Chicago — a sandstone canyon most people are surprised the state has.
- Strong vertical pull — the waterfall runs top to bottom, which suits a narrow wall or a stairwell.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Olive and buff are forgiving colours, so this one sits well on cream, oatmeal or a soft green wall — the sage room in the photographs above shows how close the greens run. An oak or walnut frame repeats the warm rock tones; black frames make the shaded canyon walls read darker and heavier. Good in a home office or a hallway, where the vertical fall of water has room to work.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? In a hallway or beside a desk, 12" x 18" or 18" x 24" is enough. On a larger wall choose 24" x 36" so the fine thread of the waterfall does not disappear.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The lettering reads STARVED ROCK on the first line and ILLINOIS beneath it. The park's full name is Starved Rock State Park, near Utica in LaSalle County.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
