A Sleeping Bear Dunes illustrated print taken from the top of the bluff, looking north along the Lake Michigan shore. Bleached dune grass fills the near ground, the sand face falls away in a long diagonal to a thin strip of beach, and the shoreline curves off through headland after headland until it fades into haze. Pines cling to the ridge on the right.
About the artwork
This is the painted version of the view rather than a flat-colour one. Grass is drawn blade by blade in the foreground, the sand face carries raked shadow that shows how steep the slope is, and the lake is layered in bands from pale turquoise at the waterline to deep indigo offshore. Rust and mauve scrub sits low on the left, wind-shaped pines mass on the right, and cream cumulus pile up over a blue that darkens toward the top edge. The lettering sits along the bottom in white: SLEEPING BEAR DUNES with MICHIGAN letterspaced below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The drop is the subject. The bluff is drawn from above, so you get the vertigo of standing at the lakeshore overlook rather than a flat beach view.
- Freshwater colour. The turquoise shallows over pale sand are specific to the Great Lakes, and the print leans into them.
- Distance built in layers. Four receding headlands give the coastline real depth.
- Warm and cool at once. Gold dune grass against indigo water makes it easy to place in almost any room.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Gold grass and indigo water make this an easy fit for sand, oatmeal, linen and pale blue walls, and it reads especially well in a bedroom. Natural oak framing echoes the dune tones, as in the window-seat photograph above. Against a darker navy or charcoal wall the pale sand face becomes the light source in the room.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The long diagonal of the bluff needs a little room to run. 16" x 24" works over a nightstand; 24" x 36" keeps the far headlands and the individual grass blades both readable.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives stretched in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Do you have another Sleeping Bear Dunes design? Yes, there are two versions of this location in the shop. The other is a flat vector illustration made of clean colour shapes with the place name printed across the top of the image. This is the painted one, with blade-by-blade grass, brushed sand shadow, denser colour and the title set along the bottom edge.
What does the print say? SLEEPING BEAR DUNES in bold capitals at the foot of the image, with MICHIGAN spaced out underneath.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
