A Shiprock poster that shows the rock as it is seen from the plain: a single mass of jagged volcanic stone standing alone above flat grassland in north-western New Mexico. The summit breaks into several sharp pinnacles, the faces fall away in long vertical flutes, and a low ridge of rock runs off to the right. Cumulus builds behind it in a deep blue sky.
About the artwork
Drawn in a dense linear illustrative style, with the rock built almost entirely from fine parallel strokes that follow the vertical fracturing of the stone. The sunlit south face is worked in apricot, tan and dusty rose; the shaded face on the left drops into slate blue and charcoal. Below, the talus skirts spread out in soft rose-grey, and the foreground plain is a warm ochre grassland dotted with blue-green clumps of desert grass. The clouds are rendered as tight curled masses in cream and grey. Caption in white capitals across the grass: SHIPROCK above NEW MEXICO. Portrait, 2:3.
About the place
The Navajo name for the formation is Tsé Bitʼaʼí, the rock with wings, and it holds an important place in Diné history and belief. It stands on Navajo Nation land, and it is a sacred site: climbing has been prohibited for decades and the rock and the surrounding land are not open for wandering. This print is made to be looked at from a distance, which is how the formation is meant to be met.
Why you'll love it
- Isolation drawn honestly — the empty plain across the bottom third is what gives the rock its scale, and it has not been cropped away.
- Line work you can read up close — the entire mass is built from hatching that follows the real vertical jointing of the volcanic neck.
- Warm and cool on one form — apricot light on one face and slate shadow on the other give the rock genuine volume.
- Quiet by design — no figures, no road, no vehicles. The composition keeps a respectful distance from the formation.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Apricot, ochre and slate is a restrained desert palette that settles against warm white, oatmeal or a muted terracotta wall. The composition is vertical and calm, so it holds a narrow wall or an alcove well — the arched recess with the wooden shelf in the photographs above is a good example. Natural or espresso framing keeps the earth tones warm.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The hatched rock face rewards scale, so 18" x 27" and up is where the drawing really shows. On a narrow wall 12" x 18" still works because the silhouette is so distinct.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame, wired and ready to hang.
What is the Navajo name for it? Tsé Bitʼaʼí — the rock with wings. It is a sacred formation on Navajo Nation land in the Four Corners region, and climbing on it is not permitted.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
