A Schafberg Railway poster from high on the mountainside: a red cog train working up a grass slope with a thread of steam behind it, the summit ridge above, and the Salzkammergut lakes lying far below on the left.
About the artwork
The drop is the point of the picture. The slope runs from the bottom right corner up to the ridge and everything else falls away — grey limestone cliffs, then green shoulders, then a long blue lake with small villages along its shore, then a hazy plain that dissolves into the horizon. The train is drawn as separate parts: a locomotive at the downhill end pushing two carriages, roofs in dark grey, window bands picked out in cream, passengers as small marks at the glass, and a plume of pale steam trailing across the grass. Near the bottom the grass is drawn blade by blade in warm yellow-green, with weathered rock outcrops and a few white umbels of wildflower. The sky is pale blue with three small clouds. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Austria beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Red against green. One saturated object in a landscape of greens, so the eye goes straight to it.
- A view with real height. The lake and plain sit far enough below to give the slope its scale.
- Cog railway detail. Locomotive, carriages and steam are drawn properly, not reduced to a red smudge.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
There is movement in this one, so it suits a room people pass through — a hall, a stairwell, or the wall above a desk. Warm white, pale grey and soft green paint let the red sit forward, and a darker wall makes it glow. Oak and walnut frames are the natural fit; black turns it graphic. It pairs well with the other alpine designs, and with anything in the shop that has a train or a boat in the frame.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Is this a real railway? Yes, a cog railway that climbs the Schafberg above the Salzkammergut lakes; the design shows it on the open grass section near the top.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
