A Sassi di Matera travel poster from the ravine path: the old cave town stacked in pale stone terraces along the top of the cliff with a cathedral tower above it, a small rock church standing on a ledge in the foreground, and the gorge dropping away in ochre and rust on the right.
About the artwork
One material, drawn a dozen ways. Everything in the frame is the same limestone — town, cliff, path, church — so all the separation has to come from value and temperature, and it does: bone and cream where the sun hits, warm ochre on the middle slopes, deep rust and violet-brown in the shaded gorge. The town is the densest passage, with individual roofs, arched openings and stairways cut into the rock face, and it deliberately blurs the line between building and cliff, which is the whole point of the Sassi. The path in the near foreground is drawn stone by stone with dry scrub along it. Sky is a single flat blue. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Italy beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A town you cannot tell from the rock. The drawing keeps that ambiguity instead of tidying it away.
- Monochrome that is not grey. Bone through ochre to rust, all one stone.
- Ancient without being ruined. This is a living town, drawn as one.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
An earth-tone print that behaves like a warm neutral, so it will hang almost anywhere and it is particularly good in a room with linen, jute, leather and unglazed ceramic. Cream and clay walls suit it; cold grey does not. Walnut and natural frames both work. It pairs well with the Ronda print — two towns built into rock, one golden, one bleached.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Where is the view from? From the path along the ravine, looking back at the cave town on the cliff edge.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
