An alexander nevsky sofia poster taken from across the open square: the cathedral spread wide and low under a great gilded dome, with a dozen green copper half-domes stacked around it and people crossing the pale paving in front.
About the artwork
The colour story is gold against verdigris, and the two are kept apart cleanly. The main dome is ribbed and gilded, catching a sheen of near-white on its left flank, topped by a gold cross on a ball finial; the bell tower to the left carries a second, smaller gold dome above an open belfry. Everything else in the roofline is oxidised copper — barrel roofs, conical caps, half-domes and a run of small apse domes along the right — all in soft sea-green with pale highlights where the light strikes. Between them the walls are cream limestone, banded with dentil courses and small green ornament, opening into arcaded galleries of round-headed arches. Behind the building a bare green mountain rises in flat, hazy planes, with autumn-orange treetops and low roofs at either side. The foreground is a wide bleached plaza raked with long blue shadows, low stone blocks, a small kiosk, and perhaps forty walking figures drawn in a few strokes each. The city name in wide-tracked uppercase with Bulgaria beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Gold and sea-green. An unusual pairing, and the reason this print does not look like every cathedral poster.
- A crowd, drawn small. The figures give the plaza its scale and a sense of an ordinary afternoon.
- Wide, low massing. The building spreads sideways, so it fills the frame comfortably.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The pale cream ground and soft green roofs make this an easy entryway or landing print — somewhere it gets a moment of attention rather than a whole wall. Chalky white, pale sage and soft grey-green walls all flatter it, and brushed brass hardware picks up the gilding without shouting. A pale oak or white frame keeps it airy; avoid heavy dark wood, which drags the greens down. It hangs well opposite a mirror where the gold catches reflected light.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What words are printed on it? The lettering reads Sofia, with Bulgaria beneath — the city name rather than the cathedral's full name.
What is the green shape behind the building? The mountain that stands over the city to the south, drawn as a soft, hazy mass so it stays behind the domes.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
