A Sable Island poster from the dune crest: two wild horses grazing in tall marram grass, the long crescent of sand curving away to the north, and the open Atlantic running in against the beach in line after line of surf.
About the artwork
Wind is the subject as much as the horses. The marram grass fills the whole lower third and is drawn blade by blade, all combed the same way, and the dunes behind it are shaped in long smooth ridges with the sand shading from bright cream on the lit faces to warm ochre in the hollows. The horses are painted in chestnut and bay with their manes blown across their necks; more of the band graze further along the ridge as small dark shapes. The sea is the only cool colour, a hard blue combed with white breaking lines all the way to the horizon.
The layout is the Canadian park service sheet used across this series, with the type in rust orange: cream border, small dark capitals along the top reading NOVA SCOTIA · 43.95° N, 59.91° W · EST 2013, and SABLE ISLAND at the foot over NATIONAL PARK, with the Parks Canada wordmark and beaver roundel. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Wild horses on a sandbar in the Atlantic. Roughly 500 of them live here, unmanaged, 300 kilometres offshore.
- Gold on blue. Warm grass and dune against cold ocean — the strongest colour contrast in the Canada parks set after PEI.
- Grass drawn as texture. The combed marram is what gives the print its wind and its depth.
- A young reserve. Established 2013, printed on the sheet with its coordinates.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Warm sand and chestnut sit beautifully on cream, oatmeal and clay walls, and the print works in a room with linen, rattan or leather. Natural oak frames match the dune; espresso deepens the horses. It is a natural gift for anyone who rides, and it hangs well beside the Prince Edward Island sheet as a pair of Atlantic coasts.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Are the horses really wild? Yes — they are free-roaming and legally protected, with no human management of the herd. The banner along the top gives the reserve's coordinates and its founding year, 2013.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
