A Rochester, New York travel poster standing inside the Genesee gorge and looking upstream at High Falls, the whole river dropping over a straight rock lip in a wall of white water, with a row of red brick mill buildings sitting right on the brink and the downtown towers behind them.
About the artwork
Hard-edged vector shapes worked almost like a two-colour screen print: everything cool is teal, everything built is red brick, and the water is left as flat cream and white. Layered shading blocks give the gorge walls their bulk — dark petrol teal in the shadowed cliffs, tan and buff on the sunlit ledges, then broken white where the river churns between them. Details to look for: the tall brick tower with its stepped cornice and the flagpole on the left mill, the arched loading bays along the mill wall, the two slim smokestacks, the pale modern office towers behind, and the low black railing along the mill terrace. The printed type reads ROCHESTER above NEW YORK. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A waterfall in the middle of a city — factory brick standing directly on the lip of a working cataract is the thing that makes this place unlike any other Northeast downtown.
- Two colours, hard worked — the teal and oxblood scheme keeps it graphic and poster-like rather than photographic.
- Gorge walls in the foreground — the split rock ledges on the left and right pull the eye down the river and give real scale to the drop.
- Industrial and wild at once — mills, smokestacks and whitewater share a single frame.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
This is the coolest-toned print in the set, so it does its best work on a warm wall — clay, camel, oat or a soft terracotta — where the brick reds find an echo. On the walnut sideboard in the photographs above the mill brick and the wood tone line up almost exactly. Black frames suit the graphic two-colour treatment; natural oak warms the teal for a bedroom.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this Rochester in New York or Rochester in Minnesota? New York. The subject is the downtown waterfall on the Genesee River with its brick mills. Our Rochester, Minnesota print is a separate artwork showing a coral Art Deco tower on a pedestrian plaza, so the two look nothing alike on a wall.
What size should I get? The white water is built from many small shapes that merge at small sizes, so 18" x 24" and up is best. For a stairwell or a tall narrow wall, 20" x 30" suits the vertical gorge.
Does it come framed? Paper ships unframed and rolled. Matte canvas is stretched and ready to hang. Framed canvas comes in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? ROCHESTER in wide white capitals with NEW YORK smaller below. No signage appears on the mill buildings.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
