A Rainbow Falls Mammoth Lakes poster looking upstream at a single wide curtain of water pouring off a cliff of columnar basalt. The columns stand in packed vertical ranks on both walls of the gorge, pines line the rim, and the river braids over pale boulders straight toward the viewer with rust-red autumn shrubs on either bank.
About the artwork
Painterly and dense with detail rather than flat and graphic: brushy cloud edges, hatched rock faces and hundreds of separately drawn conifer needles. The colour runs from a strong mid blue sky and cream cumulus down through ochre and warm grey-brown basalt to deep pine green, with the falls and river in pale blue-white and small bursts of rust red in the streamside brush. Sunlight lands on the right-hand cliff and leaves the left wall in shadow, which sets the depth. The bottom band reads RAINBOW FALLS over CALIFORNIA in white capitals. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The basalt is the point — the fall drops through the same columnar rock formation that makes this stretch of the San Joaquin gorge unmistakable.
- A warm waterfall print — ochre stone and rust brush keep it from going cold and blue like most water artwork.
- Leads the eye — the river runs out of the bottom of the frame, so the composition pulls you in from anywhere in the room.
- Eastern Sierra keepsake — a clear marker for anyone who has walked in from Mammoth or ridden the shuttle down to the falls.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Ochre and rust in the rock make this an easy match for terracotta, sand and putty walls, and it holds up against warmer neutrals that would swallow a bluer landscape. The oak frame on the teak sideboard in the photographs above picks up the same tan as the cliff face. In a study or a dining room, hang it near clay pottery or a woven basket and let the blue river be the only cool note.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The basalt columns are fine detail, so 18" x 27" is the smallest size where they still read clearly. For a feature wall, take it to 30" x 40".
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Which Rainbow Falls is this? The California one, on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River near Mammoth Lakes and Devils Postpile, not the falls of the same name in Hawaii or the Great Smokies.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
