A Portsmouth New Hampshire travel poster that looks down a bank of massed dahlias to the Piscataqua River. Rows of red, orange, cream and gold blooms fill the whole foreground. A red brick mill building with a slate gable and tall chimneys stands at the left edge, and across the deep teal water the Portsmouth waterfront runs in a line of brick blocks, a white church steeple and a round brick water tower, with white sails scattered on the current.
About the artwork
Flat vector illustration in the mid-century travel poster tradition: hard-edged shapes, no outlines, and shading built from stacked bands of flat colour rather than gradients. The palette is counted in three groups — scarlet, tangerine, marigold and cream for the flower beds; brick red with charcoal roofs for the buildings; and teal, slate and pale sky blue for the river and horizon. Small details reward a close look: the sailboat hulls, the dock pilings, the belfry on the steeple. Typography is a wide white sans-serif reading PORTSMOUTH with NEW HAMPSHIRE below in smaller letterspaced caps. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A garden and a harbour in one frame — flowers in the foreground, working waterfront in the distance, so the picture has depth instead of one flat view.
- Colour that carries a room — the scarlet and marigold beds give it real warmth, balanced by the cool teal of the river.
- Named on the print — PORTSMOUTH and NEW HAMPSHIRE are part of the design, so it reads as a place, not just a landscape.
- For the Seacoast — a specific gift for anyone tied to Portsmouth, the Piscataqua or New Hampshire's short stretch of coast.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The red and gold flower beds pick up warm walls, so it settles easily against the terracotta room and the walnut sideboard in the photographs above. On cool walls the balance flips: against the sage green wall the teal river reads first and the blooms become the accent. A warm oak or walnut frame suits it better than black, which fights the brick tones.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or a bed, 24" x 36" holds the wall. In a hallway or a gallery grouping, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" is easier to place.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The print reads PORTSMOUTH across the sky, with NEW HAMPSHIRE beneath it in smaller capitals. No other text appears on the artwork.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
