A Portovenere travel poster taken from the rocks across the inlet: dark slabs of stone in the foreground, choppy teal water with breaking surf between, and on the far side a wall of narrow coloured houses under a bell tower, with a striped stone church out on the point.
About the artwork
The only print in this group with no sand in it at all. The bottom half is rock and water: layered black-green ledges cut into flat angular planes running out of both bottom corners, and a sea that is genuinely rough, built from shapes of petrol, mid-blue and white with three or four ridges of foam curling towards the viewer and small star-shaped sparkles where light catches the surface. Against that cool weight the town is a thin band of heat — tall, very narrow houses shoulder to shoulder in red, brick-orange, ochre, butter yellow and pale green, four and five storeys each, shuttered, standing straight up out of the sea wall. Above them a square campanile and a low dome. On the headland at the right stands a small church banded in dark and pale stone, with a wooded hill behind. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Italy beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Rough water, not a calm bay. Surf, dark rock and spray give it weather that most coastal prints lack.
- A stripe of hot colour. Red, orange and yellow facades against petrol blue, all in one narrow band.
- The banded church on the point. Dark and pale stone drawn course by course at the tip of the headland.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Dark, saturated and dramatic, which suits a hallway, a stairwell or a study more than a pale bedroom. Petrol blue, deep teal and charcoal walls let the coloured houses read as the light source; warm white works too. Brass, dark timber and leather sit better with it than pale rattan. A black frame with a white mount keeps it sharp; natural wood softens the contrast. It hangs well beside another Ligurian harbour print.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What is the striped building on the rocks? A small stone church at the tip of the headland, built in alternating dark and pale courses, sitting directly on the rock above the water.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
