A piazza maggiore bologna poster drawn from a high window looking down into the square: the verdigris bronze fountain at the centre, terracotta palazzi crowding in on every side, and brick towers rising behind them into a flat blue sky.
About the artwork
Almost everything in the picture is some version of red — coral, brick, rust, salmon, burnt orange — and the only relief is the green-blue of the bronze and the sky, which is why it reads so strongly from across a room. The fountain is the anchor: a figure with one arm out, standing on a tall pedestal with cherubs and sirens at the corners, water arcing from the jets, all in oxidised green against warm stone. Behind it a Gothic palazzo carries rows of paired pointed windows, a crenellated parapet and a pale clock face high on the wall. A ribbed grey-green dome sits over the rooftops at the left, gold figures perched along a cornice below it. Slim brick towers stand at the right. Down at pavement level there are cream café parasols, small red pots of geraniums, cast-iron lamp posts with clustered globes, and dozens of tiny figures on mottled terracotta paving. The city name in wide-tracked uppercase with Italy beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The bronze against the brick. One green object in a red picture, and it holds the whole composition.
- A square in use. Parasols, café tables and walking figures, not an empty postcard view.
- Warm without being loud. Terracotta and coral carry an evening room beautifully.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The terracotta range makes this a natural for kitchens, dining rooms and anywhere you eat. It sits well on cream, clay and warm off-white walls, and it will happily hold a chalky olive or deep green wall too. Natural oak and walnut pick up the brick tones; a slim black frame keeps it from feeling rustic. Copper pans, ceramic and linen suit it. Pair it with another Italian print for a two-up above a sideboard.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What words are printed on it? The lettering reads Bologna, with Italy beneath — the city name rather than the name of the square.
Is this the same as the Two Towers print? No. The leaning brick towers appear in the background here, but our Two Towers design is a separate artwork of the same city, drawn close up from the street.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
