An Old Man's Cave Hocking Hills poster looking straight up the gorge. A single ribbon of water drops off the sandstone lip into a still green plunge pool, an arched wooden footbridge crosses high above with a few small figures on it, and the recess cliffs rise on both sides in rust and cream bands. Stone steps climb the left bank under tall hemlocks.
About the artwork
Painterly illustration with heavy, carefully layered rock work rather than flat vector shapes. The Blackhand sandstone is drawn band by band — iron red, brick, buff and pale cream where the cliff has weathered — against deep hemlock green, sage and olive in the canopy, jade in the pool and a soft blue sky with one cream thunderhead. The falling water is rendered as thin vertical strokes so it reads as a narrow, steady flow rather than a torrent. The hand-cut stone stairway at the left edge and the footbridge are the two human marks in the scene. White capitals along the bottom read OLD MAN'S CAVE, with OHIO letterspaced beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The gorge, not the overlook — the view is from the creek bed looking up, which is how the trail actually presents the falls.
- Sandstone colour done properly — the red and cream banding in the recess walls is what separates Hocking Hills from any other Midwest ravine.
- Small figures for scale — the walkers on the bridge show how deep the gorge really is without a caption.
- Green all year — the hemlock canopy keeps the palette forest green, so it does not read as a seasonal autumn print.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Rust sandstone and hemlock green are a natural fit for cream, clay and warm grey walls, and they sit well beside leather and oak. On a deep olive or forest wall the pale waterfall becomes the focal point. Natural oak frames echo the timber bridge, as in the bench and alcove photographs above; espresso works if the room already runs dark.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The rock banding and the stairway detail come alive at 24" x 36". At 12" x 18" the waterfall, bridge and gorge walls still read, so smaller sizes suit a stairwell or a narrow entry.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, with hanging hardware fitted.
How is this different from the Hocking Hills print? Old Man's Cave is one gorge inside Hocking Hills State Park, and this design stays on that gorge — the Upper Falls, the plunge pool and the footbridge. The shop also carries a separate Hocking Hills design covering the wider park, so the two work together rather than repeating one view.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
