This Nara watercolor print shows the wide roof of Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden), seen from the hillside near Nigatsu-do. It is an artistic, watercolor-style interpretation of Nara, not an exact view of the city.
About the artwork
The great wooden hall is drawn with dense dark-brown ink on its roof brackets and columns, under gray tile washes. Ginkgo leaves are layered in bright yellow dots, and moss-covered stone lanterns are built up in blocks with ink. Ginkgo gold and weathered wood brown lead the palette, with moss green and tile gray, plus orange-pink autumn leaves and the golden roof ornaments as accents. The two-tier hall sits at the center of the middle distance, the wooden veranda of Nigatsu-do with hanging bronze lanterns is on the right and temple roofs and town houses spread out behind. Mossy stone steps fill the foreground, and the bottom fades into golden leaves on a white border. "NARA" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- Sika deer on the steps. Deer rest and stand on the mossy stone stairs leading down the hill.
- Golden ginkgo canopy. Late-autumn ginkgo trees frame the view in glowing yellow.
- Temple details. A monk in black robes and bronze lanterns under the eaves add quiet detail.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The gold, brown and moss tones fit a living room with wood furniture, a tea corner or a calm home office. It is a thoughtful gift for someone who fed the deer in Nara or loves Japanese temples.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of Nara? No. It is an artistic interpretation of Nara, combining the temple buildings and autumn trees into one painted view.
What text is printed on it? Only the city name, "NARA," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
