A Mono Lake tufa towers poster built around the strange limestone spires that stand in the shallows on the south shore. One tall, knobbled tower dominates the centre of the sheet, lit warm gold by low sun, with a cluster of smaller pinnacles around it and their reflections stretching into flat green-blue water. Behind them the eastern wall of the Sierra Nevada runs across the whole width of the print, still holding snow in its high gullies.
About the artwork
Painted with strong modelling and a lot of surface texture — the tufa is drawn pitted and crusted, in ochre, honey and bone, with cool violet shadow down the shaded faces. The lake is a muted teal-green fading to pale mint at the shoreline, scattered with rough tufa cobbles. Above the range the sky moves from a deep slate blue at the top through apricot to a warm salmon band along the peaks, with sunlit cream cloudbanks either side. Sagebrush, dry bunchgrass and one small dark pine sit on the right-hand bank. White type at the base reads MONO LAKE over CALIFORNIA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Nothing else looks like tufa — the calcium carbonate towers give this print a silhouette no other landscape has.
- Warm and cool in one image — gold spires against a green lake and blue-violet mountains.
- The Sierra from the dry side — the eastern escarpment, the view most people only see from Highway 395.
- A saline lake with a story — the towers stand exposed because the lake level dropped, which is part of why the place is protected.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Honey, sage and dusty apricot make this an easy match for warm white, clay or muted green walls, and it sits well with brass, leather and ceramic. Natural oak frames follow the tufa; espresso weights it for a darker room. It suits a living room or a dining wall where the sunset band can catch evening light, close to the sideboard and console settings in the photographs above.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The tufa texture rewards size, so 24" x 36" over a sofa or sideboard. For a gallery wall with other prints, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" keeps the central tower clear.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? Only MONO LAKE and CALIFORNIA, in white at the foot of the image. The towers shown are the South Tufa formations near Lee Vining, on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada off Highway 395.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Framed canvas
