A Mendenhall Ice Caves Alaska poster drawn from inside the ice, looking out. A ribbed blue vault fills the top two thirds of the sheet and its ragged arch frames the view beyond: the glacier's snout, a lake scattered with small bergs, and a wall of snow-covered peaks under piled cloud. Dark cobbles and a rust-red rock shelf line the cave floor where meltwater runs out.
About the artwork
The ice is the technical showpiece — painted in swirling, scalloped strokes that run from near-black indigo at the crown through cobalt and glacial teal to almost white at the arch lip, with fine pale linework tracing the melt channels. Outside the mouth the palette turns cool and pale: white and mauve peaks, a soft blue sky, cream cumulus, milky green lake water and floating white ice. Warm rust and dark slate rock at the edges keep the composition from going entirely cold. White type at the base reads MENDENHALL ICE CAVES above ALASKA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Blue you rarely get in a print — the graded glacier blue does the work of a colour field painting.
- A view through a frame — the ice arch makes a natural vignette around the peaks and the berg-strewn lake.
- A record of something changing — the caves under Mendenhall shift and collapse from year to year as the glacier retreats, so the scene is worth keeping on a wall.
- Cool-toned, so it lifts a warm room — useful where most landscape prints are green or gold.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Indigo and glacier blue read strongly against white, pale grey or muted blue walls, and they cool down a room with a lot of oak or brass. A white frame keeps the ice crisp; black frames make the vault look deeper. It suits a bedroom, a study or a north-facing hallway — think of the sheer-curtain window room and the arched alcove in the photographs above.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The brushwork in the ice is worth scale, so 24" x 36" or larger if you have the wall. At 12" x 18" the blue vault still carries as a block of colour.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Can you still visit the ice caves? Not dependably. The caves form and collapse as the glacier melts and retreats, and what exists changes from year to year, so the print is best read as a picture of a place in flux rather than a fixed stop on an itinerary.
What does the poster say? The lettering reads MENDENHALL ICE CAVES over ALASKA. The glacier sits in the Tongass National Forest a short drive from Juneau, so this is a glacier subject rather than the city view in the store's separate Juneau print, and a different landscape from the Lake Superior sea caves in the Apostle Islands design.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
