A Little Wild Horse Canyon poster standing in the dry wash where the slot widens out. Wind-carved sandstone leans in from both sides, the cross-bedding curls through it in ribbons, and the sandy floor runs away between the walls toward an opening where hazy blue mesas and a bank of cumulus fill the gap.
About the artwork
A dense, painterly illustration that treats the rock as flowing bands rather than flat blocks. The palette runs burnt orange and rust in the shaded overhangs, apricot and pale gold where the sun hits, cream and buff in the sand of the wash, sage and olive in the scattered desert shrubs, and cool periwinkle in the distant swell. The sky is a strong mid-blue with cream and grey cumulus. Set in white capitals across three lines at the base: LITTLE WILD, HORSE CANYON, UTAH. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A dry slot you can walk — no rope, no wading, which is why this one in the San Rafael Swell is so well known.
- The rock does the drawing — the cross-bedded swirls in the walls are the whole composition.
- Narrow and wide at once — the slot frames a long view out to the reef, so the print has depth as well as texture.
- Goblin Valley country — the trailhead sits just past the state park, and the two usually get done on the same day.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Almost the whole sheet is warm, so this print does its best work on a cool or neutral wall: soft white, pale grey-green or a chalky blue, which also picks up the sky in the gap. It sits well with rattan, linen and terracotta pots. A natural oak frame stays in the same family as the sandstone, as in the sunlit floor shot in the photographs above; a white frame gives the orange a cleaner edge.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The swirled rock texture is the point, so bigger is better: 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" on a main wall. At 12" x 18" it still works as part of a warm-toned gallery grouping.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? Three lines of lettering: LITTLE WILD, then HORSE CANYON, then UTAH, so the canyon name is split across two lines on the artwork.
How does it differ from the other Utah slot canyon print? This is the dry slot in the San Rafael Swell, all sandstone and sand. The shop's Kanarra Creek print shows a wet canyon with a waterfall, a pool and a timber ladder, and the Kodachrome Basin print shows freestanding stone chimneys in an open basin.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
