A Henry Cowell Redwoods poster standing on the loop trail in the old-growth grove above the San Lorenzo River. A fire-hollowed redwood dominates the left of the frame, its blackened cavity open at the base, while a narrow packed-earth footpath slips through sword ferns on the right and low sun cuts between the trunks in visible shafts.
About the artwork
Detailed painterly illustration, drawn with long vertical strokes that follow the fibrous bark rather than flat vector panels. The palette stays in the forest floor range: cinnamon and rust red in the bark, silver-grey where fire scarred it, deep bottle green and moss in the sword ferns, a single copper-red shrub in the middle distance, and pale cool teal in the fragments of sky between crowns. The light shafts are painted as soft diagonal beams on the right. Type is set in white at the base: HENRY COWELL REDWOODS above STATE PARK-CALIFORNIA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The hollow tree is the anchor — fire cavities like this one are how coast redwoods survive burns, and it gives the print a subject rather than just tall trunks.
- Ground level, not aerial — the footpath and ferns put you on the trail, at the scale you actually walk it.
- Santa Cruz Mountains grove — the closest old growth to the Bay Area, and a familiar walk for anyone who grew up nearby.
- A quiet, low-contrast piece — greens and browns that settle a room instead of demanding it.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Moss green and cinnamon bark read best on warm white, oatmeal or soft sage walls. Natural oak framing keeps it warm; black framing sharpens the trunk edges if the room is already dark. It suits a bedroom or a reading corner, and it sits comfortably in an arched alcove between plants, as in the photographs above.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The bark texture rewards size. 20" x 30" or 24" x 36" lets the fire cavity and the fern detail both hold; 12" x 18" works only at close range.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The printed type reads HENRY COWELL REDWOODS, with STATE PARK-CALIFORNIA on the line below.
Where is the park? Near Felton in the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 20 minutes from Santa Cruz. Its Redwood Grove Loop is a flat, short walk through the old-growth trees shown here.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
