A Haystack Rock illustrated print painted from the shoreline on a big-weather afternoon: the basalt monolith rising brown and green out of the surf, a wall of cumulus stacked behind it, gulls scattered across the sky, and four or five lines of breaking swell rolling in over the wet sand. Two walkers stand at the waterline on the left, small enough to give the rock its 235-foot height.
About the artwork
This is the painterly edition — dense, hand-illustrated detail rather than flat vector shapes. The rock is built from warm sienna and ochre stone with rust streaks, its crown and upper ledges thick with dark green moss and wind-cut shrubs. Behind it a towering cumulus bank is modelled in cream, pearl and slate grey against a steel blue sky, with lower streaks of storm cloud drawn out to the right. The surf is sea green and white, laid in fine ridged strokes; the foreground beach carries a long brown and grey reflection combed with horizontal texture. The Needles stand as two smaller stacks either side. The type is set at the bottom of the artwork, over the wet sand: HAYSTACK ROCK in bold white capitals with a wide-tracked OREGON beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Weather, not postcard sun — the cloud bank takes up as much of the sheet as the rock does.
- Warm palette — sienna, moss green and pearl grey, which sits better with wood and leather than a cool blue print does.
- Detail that rewards a close look — shrubs on the summit, gulls, spray, the two figures at the tideline.
- Type at the foot — the lettering sits low, so the sky and the stack stay completely open.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The sienna and moss green want a warm ground: cream, clay, oatmeal or a soft olive wall rather than stark white. It holds a living room well — above a cream sofa with ochre cushions, as in the photographs above, or leaning on the floor beside a window. Natural oak framing echoes the stone tones; a dark walnut frame deepens the storm greys.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? This one carries a lot of fine detail, so bigger is better. 24 x 36 or 30 x 40 inches lets the cloud texture and the summit shrubs read properly; below 12 x 18 the small details start to close up.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship rolled and unframed. Framed canvas arrives stretched and framed in white, black, espresso or natural wood, with hanging hardware fitted.
What does the poster say? HAYSTACK ROCK in large white capitals along the bottom of the artwork, with OREGON set smaller and wider below it. Cannon Beach does not appear on the sheet.
Is there another version of this design? Yes. This is the illustrated, painterly edition with the lettering at the foot of the artwork. The shop also carries a separate flat vector Haystack Rock poster — cool ice blue, low tide, mirrored sand, lettering set high in the sky. Search the shop for the Cannon Beach low tide poster to compare them.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
