A Haiku Stairs Oahu poster of one of Hawaii's most photographed structures, drawn from the steps themselves. A rust-red steel staircase with tubular handrails climbs a knife-edge ridge, narrowing as it rises, then threading up a green spur that disappears into a wall of white cumulus. Koʻolau ridges fall away in dark folds on the left, a strip of ocean sits on the horizon, and dense ferns crowd both sides of the treads.
About the artwork
A detailed painted illustration with strong perspective — the stair treads and rails converge hard toward the top of the frame, and the ridge is modelled in ribbed light and shadow rather than flat colour. The palette is built on green: lime and chartreuse in the sunlit foliage, olive and near-black in the shaded gullies, against oxidised orange-red steel that is the only warm note. Clouds are painted as solid cauliflower masses in cream and grey, and the sky is deep teal at the top. Text sits low in white sans-serif capitals: HAIKU STAIRS above OAHU, a dot, and HAWAII. Portrait, 2:3.
About the stairs today
The stairway was built as wartime access to a radio station on the ridge and stood for decades as an unofficial landmark. It was closed to the public for many years, climbing it was illegal, and the City and County of Honolulu began removing the structure in 2024. This print is a record of how the stairs looked, not a guide to a place you can visit.
Why you'll love it
- A landmark that no longer stands — the image documents a structure that has since been dismantled.
- Vertigo on a wall — the converging rails and the drop on both sides give the print unusual depth.
- Green like nowhere else — the Koʻolau ridges have a fluted, fern-covered texture the illustration keeps.
- Above the clouds — the cumulus sits below the ridge line, which flips the usual mountain composition.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Because the print is almost entirely green and white, it holds up against strong wall colours — warm white keeps it fresh, deep teal or charcoal makes the rust staircase glow. A black frame suits the graphic steel lines; natural oak softens it. It sits well in the plant-heavy living room and the arched alcove shown in the photographs above, and pairs naturally with real greenery, rattan and pale linen.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The steep perspective reads best with height, so 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" in a stairwell or on a tall wall. At 12" x 18" it still works as a strong vertical in a grouping.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas ships in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? Two lines in white capitals at the bottom: HAIKU STAIRS, then OAHU and HAWAII separated by a dot.
Can the stairs still be climbed? No. The Haiku Stairs were closed to the public, access was illegal, and removal of the structure began in 2024. The print is a historical image of the site.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
